Full-Synthetic Racing Power Steering Fluid for Diesel Competition Pick-Ups

(Clinton, MO / 09.17.21) Champion Oil, a PLZ Aeroscience Company and a recognized leader in racing and specialty lubricants, now offers Champion Full-Synthetic Racing Power Steering Fluid. Part #4370H

“Racing power steering fluid (PSF) is an essential part of keeping race trucks at peak performance. A top tier power steering fluid like Champion’s part #4370H ensures the hoses, pistons, valves, and power steering pump work optimally and not start to deteriorate,” stated Karl Dedolph of Champion Oil.

“Champion Full-Synthetic Racing Power Steering Fluid reduces temperatures and delivers consistent steering response in on and off-road competition applications. It has exceptional low temperature flow that reduces initial drag on the power steering pump.”

“Its’ robust formulation is a full-synthetic fluid that provides improved thermal stability for less pressure drop as temperatures rise. It also offers high temperature foam resistance for better cooling and improved steering precision.”

“Champion’s Racing PSF is a hydraulic fluid used in the steering system to create a hydraulic link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. It decreases the amount of effort required to turn the wheels.”

“It also lubricates the moving parts within the steering system. It suppresses foaming and prevents corrosion in the power steering gear and steering pump, which keeps performance pick-ups in drag racing, off-road racing, hill climbs, rock crawling, etc. working optimally,” added Dedolph.

Champion’s Racing PSF meets or exceeds all specification standards that

are requirements for viscosity, detergents, additives, and other

components of this type of fluid. It is specifically engineered for racing

applications.

Components and specifications include: Decene
Homopolymer Hydrotreated, Heterocyclic Ether, Alkaryl Amine, Zinc Alkydithiophosphate, Dibutylhydrogen Phosphite, Carboxylic Acid Ester, Toluene, Diphenylamine, Aryl Phosphite, and Alkylated Phenol.

Flash Point °C (°F) 225 (437)

“A good maintenance practice for truck is to inspect the power steering fluid occasionally, it should maintain its’ color. If it’s dark, that’s a sign it’s time to change it. If you see any dirt, debris, or sludge in the power steering fluid, it’s time for the system to be flushed. If you hear some sort of noise when the wheel is turned or see some leaks, that may be another sign it’s time to change the fluid.”

Champion Oil's 5-Minute Engine Flush for Diesel Applications

It's interesting how many things one can do in five minutes. If you ask Google "What are some things that take five minutes to do?" you will come up with all kinds of websites. Here are a few: 8 Tasks That Take 5 Minutes or Less. 50 Tasks You Can Easily Tackle in 5 Minutes. 21 Things You Can Do In 5 Minutes or Less. 27 Productive Things You Can Do In 5 Minutes.

The lists go on and on, and if you read through them all you would still not have seen this task listed, a 5 Minute Engine Flush.

This announcement from early summer garnered a lot of attention so we thought it worth a reminder: Champion Brands' 5 Minute Engine Flush.

* * *
Champion Oil, a global leader in specialty lubricants, has announced the launch of a 5-Minute Engine Flush (Part #4133) with robust solvent characteristics that cleans valves, stubborn engine deposits, sludge, varnish, plus restores lost performance. The product protects, frees sticking valves and removes harmful buildups.

Sludge buildup can be caused by prolonged oil change intervals, stop-and-go driving, or vehicle inactivity for months at a time.

Engine oil is intended to cycle through the engine, lubricating components to help keep them in good working order. Sometimes, however, the manner in which a person drives can interfere with the oil being able to do the job it was meant to do.

For example, short trips and lots of stop-and-go driving can cause particles in the oil to become deposits in a diesel engine, which builds up over time. If this particulate matter becomes excessive, clean oil is virtually useless in removing it.

The procedure for this 5-Minute Engine Flush is as follows. Remove a small amount of oil from the engine and add Champion 5-Minute Engine Flush, which is designed to break up carbon, varnish and sludge deposits in the engine. Take the vehicle for a test drive, or idle for 10 minutes while occasionally increasing the RPM to work the chemical throughout the engine. As the deposits are loosened they will become suspended in the oil and trapped in the filter. The vehicle is then ready for a new oil change with a new filter, thereby removing the dirt, gunk and used oil.

There are other benefits to consider. For example, if your diesel vehicle has experienced a head gasket leak where coolant has seeped into the crankcase and mixed with the oil, it is important that this is cleaned out thoroughly.

A pre-owned vehicle with no maintenance records or recent internal engine repairs would benefit from a flush. And when there have been long intervals between oil changes, a flush would address the matter of oil getting dirtier over time with the likelihood that carbons and other particles have built up in the engine.

Champion 5-Minute Engine Flush is a highly effective cleaning product that gives engines a fresh start. The treat rate is 24 oz. for diesel applications.

5 Truck Trends In the Class 8 Diesel Realm

Photo by Nigel Tadyanehondo on Unsplash
If you want to know what's happening in any industry, talk with the editors of that market's leading publications. Editors have their fingers on the pulse, and have enough experience to notice the difference between a significant event and a flash of buzz that will be quickly forgotten.

On August 3 Fleet Equipment magazine published a story by managing editor Alex Crissey titled 5 Truck Trend Takeaways from July. (I like the alliteration in the title.) Here are the biggest stories as we drift through late summer. Each is accompanied by a video or podcast by one of the FE editors.

5. It's Summer and Heat Is the Real Killer of Batteries

Most of us are aware of the impact freezing temps have on batteries, significantly reducing their charging power during an Arctic blast. Senior editor David Sickels says that heavy duty battery experts say “Summer heat and sun are what kills a battery; it just doesn’t know it’s dead until it gets cold.” That's an intriguing observation. The greater the heat, the shorter the service life.

Watch the video here, or read the transcript.

4. Consider Replacing Truck Mirrors with Cameras

The Fleet Future podcast introduces us to the makers of MirrorEye, a system which replaces mirrors to give greater visibility as well as improved aerodynamics. In the podcast, the Stoneridge president and VP discuss the benefits of the system as well as the experiences of those who have been using it.

3. The Impact of ADAS on Truck Service

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are high tech tools that are potentially saving lives by helping drivers stay in lane and other collision-avoidance services. The new systems have drawbacks, however. They need extra attention when it comes to maintenance. To work effectively they need to be periodically calibrated and not ignored.  Be sure to watch the video within the 5 Truck Trends story.

2. The Business of EV Charging Stations

It's estimated that the EV charging station business will exceed $100 billion in 7 years. Keeping track of all the options available for fleet managers moving into the EV realm would be an endless task. Thankfully Fleet Equipment editors do it for us. Here's a current list of all the Commercial EV Charging Station providers with details about each.

1. Are You Paying Attention to the 3G Sunset?

There is always so much happening in the world that it's easy to miss a few important stories now and then. One of these stories is the looming termination of 3G. Why does it matter? When these older networks go dark, you can potentially lose your data-driven truck solutions unless you upgrade your devices. As much as we appreciate the benefits of a high tech world, it can be emotionally  to always be worrying about something we've forgotten to take care of. Fortunately, Fleet Equipment editors have you covered.

Winners and Photos from Last Weekend's East Coast Diesel Nationals Gives

All photos courtesy Diesel Motorsports
For a lot of people, their first exposure to diesel competition took place at a county fair.  County fairs are a tradition as American as apple pie. In fact, your first apple pie might have even been at a pie eating contest at a county fair. Fairs give communities a chance to show off what is special in their communities. They are also lathered with nostalgic memories, becoming a gathering place for young and old alike.

These thoughts came to mind when I read this headline from the Journal-NewsCounty Fair Tractor And Truck Pulls Rescheduled (Again) For Aug. 22. It was that word "Again" that tipped us off to the biggest challenge all motorsports promoters face: the weather.

EAST COAST DIESEL NATIONALS 2021

This past weekend in Numidia, Pa., the day opened with a bright sun scattering its arrows of light across the landscape. It seemed a good omen, since the East Coast had been receiving buckets of rain nearly daily for a week while a large swath of the country has been experiencing a drought.

Unfortunately the day's events were later cut short... by more rain. Despite the weather, racers persevered and we had winners in a number of categories so the the day was not a complete washout. The 2500+ attendees who came to Numidia saw 175 competitors in a limited event that included racing, pulling, dyno and Show-N-Shine.

Champion Blue Flame Oil is pleased announce the following winners for the East Coast Diesel Nationals last Saturday in Numidia, PA.

The Diesel High Performance Truck Market Is Still Growing

President Biden puts F-150 Lightning through the paces.
It has to be fun to be a president. Fun might not be the most apt word when you think about hostile critics and the need to have a thick hide. Nevertheless, there are some perks that come with the job. For example, last week President Joe Biden took a ride in the new EV Ford F-150 Lightning. His little cruise on the Ford test track made headlines across the country.

That news story brought to mind another story that got headlines when Teddy Roosevelt was president at the beginning of the last century. Roosevelt had approved the development of a new submarine for the U.S. Navy. It was called The Plunger. Some people were critical of the submarine as a weapon because it seemed un-American to use stealth to sneak up on enemies rather than fight face-to-face.

When the submarine was completed and tested, the president used his executive authority to go take it for a spin. That is, President Roosevelt wanted to see what it was like to be submerged underwater, to check it out and experience it first hand rather than simply get reports from the captains. The day he went out there was a storm, but with the Plunger twenty or forty feet underwater (depending on which account you read), it was a perfectly smooth excursion, ever though the surface was turbulent.

There were critics (this is where the thick skin is useful) who castigated him for risking his life for a unique nautical expedition. Nevertheless, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

ALL THIS CAME TO MIND as I read about a new report on the global growth of the diesel high performance diesel truck market. EVs are making headlines, but analysts who look at what is really happening (as opposed to what is generating buzz) acknowledge that the diesel market is still in a growth mode.

An April MarketWatch report states that the diesel engines market was $7,921 million in 2019 and will be $9743 million in 2025. Part of this growth is driven by a surging demand in construction and auxiliary power equipment.

Another report by Industry Growth Insights is projecting continued growth through 2028. Though their data analysis sees a tapering of the growth rate, the diesel engine market will not see a decline for quite some time. A report by The Shot Caller has similar expectations. Their report predicts growth to the end of 2026, with an implied continuation into 2027.

No one can say for sure how quickly the adoption of EVs will occur. For now, there's limited infrastructure and a multitude of hurdles for EVs.

The news stories regarding the unveiling of the EV Ford F-150 Lightning have focused on Ford's bold embrace of the EV future, making a risky bet on their number one selling truck. There's another side to the story, however, which we covered earlier this month. Ford engineers are developing a new diesel engine design utilizing an old-style concept. (See The Next Ford F-150)

In other words, Ford management is preparing for a future that can go either way. For now, the need for diesel power is continuing to grow, and the leaders recognize this.

UREA Costs Are Climbing; Expect Increases in Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Urea
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-hazardous solution, which is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to break down dangerous NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water. DEF is not a fuel additive, however, and never comes into contact with diesel.

Here’s the kicker…The price of urea, a key component in Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), reached $392 a ton at the end of March, up from close to $350 at the start of the month. This represents a 9% increase over the period. Strikingly, the price of urea has skyrocketed by close to 80% over the past six months. The majority of the price increases have been seen since the beginning of 2021 and are shown below.

“DEF, as diesel vehicle owners know, is an important component in keeping trucks and machinery operating within federal emission guidelines. What DEF is, at a simplified chemical level, is a combination of deionized water and urea that transform harmful nitrous oxide emissions into harmless water and gas,” stated Karl Dedolph of Champion Oil.

“Starting in 2010, DEF became a major need for companies using medium and heavy-duty diesel vehicles. Changes in EPA emission standards required reductions in diesel burning engines to reduce their pollution output to the lowest levels in history, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is the technology of choice for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). As this emission standard has increased to include off-road vehicles, generators and a variety of engines, DEF is being used now more than ever."

“Assumedly, as regulations increase, DEFs importance in keeping emissions down will continue to be high. Modern technology has quickly adapted to DEF's role in our lives, “ added Dedolph  “Vehicles with SCR technology have a display on their dashboard that can easily alert the driver as to DEF levels. The improved fuel efficiency ,with the addition of DEF, is a great benefit for diesel vehicle owners when by law they have to conform to DEF emission standards.”

Champion Oil's Winter-Blend Diesel Flo Fuel Additive Gets an Upgrade

It's wintertime and Champion Oil has been active making sure our diesel equipment is being taken care of with a variety of new or enhanced products. This week Champion announced the launch of an enhanced "winter-blend" Diesel Flo Fuel Additive with Cetane.

“Most diesel enthusiasts use fuel additives from time to time, most likely in the winter to prevent gelling,” stated Karl Dedolph of Champion Brands, LLC.  “But there are other diesel enthusiasts or fleet owners that regularly treat their fuel with additives. Some use detergent additives or lubricity agents to make up for the loss of sulfur in diesel fuel, which disappeared 15 years ago under an EPA mandate. Others use fuel stabilizers to offset the effects of minimal use or storage, and cetane improvers to optimize combustion with the intent to reduce emissions and increase horsepower.”

Dedolph went on to cite a number of problems that can be avoided or resolved by means of additives. “One of the most common problems, and perhaps the most easily avoided," he said, "relates to the condition of the injectors. By using the correct fuel additives, injector damage due to water and internal diesel injector deposits can be prevented. When a lubricity additive is used, the life of the injector is increased. Best method is to examine the Bottom of Form condition of an injector is when tearing down the engine. If it didn’t fail over its expected replacement life, perhaps that’s the result of the additives you used. “

Another problem that additives can address is fuel filter plugging.  “If you suffer from fuel filter plugging, an additive can help dissolve the asphaltenes. These are high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons that are usually found on the bottom of the crude. They can also be formed in ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel from the heat created by higher pump pressures inside the fuel system and returned to the tank from your fuel pressure regulator.”

Fuel additives can help dissolve the asphaltenes in the fuel and also prevent them from forming and plugging filters, he explained, adding, "Many diesel owners suffer from the effects of a low cetane rating within the fuel that causes poor fuel economy and hard starts during the cold months. A good fuel additive should boost the cetane number and solve each most of the fuel and filter related issues.”

The new, more robust formula found in Champion's Diesel Flo with Cetane (part #4183) is a premium diesel fuel anti-gel and de-icer designed to prevent operability issues in diesel fueling systems at sub-zero temperatures. The product disperses and removes water from diesel fuel and prevents icing of fuel filters.  Cold-flow improvers prevent aggregation of diesel wax crystals, allowing for lower pour points, cold-filter plugging points (CFPPs), and gel temperatures in low-sulfur and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels and biodiesel blends.

This is Champion's most concentrated formula ever,  boasting the following features and benefits:

  • Reduces solvent load and decreases cost-to-treat
  • Performs in low sulfur and ultra-low sulfur diesel and biodiesel blends
  • Reduces cold-filter plugging points by as much as 20°C (36°F) in untreated fuels
  • Disperses and removes water from fuel
  • Reduces the pouring point and gel temperature of fuel
  • Helps prevent fuel filter icing and cold-filter plugging
  • One quart treats up to 250 US Gallons of diesel fuel
