SEMA Steps Up To Defend Diesel Enthusiasts

First, a quick nod to inventor and mechanical engineer Rudolph Diesel, who was born on this day in 1858. He would undoubtedly be astounded at what the auto industry has achieved using the engine concept that he created.

On Monday The Drive published an informative article about the advocacy role SEMA is playing on behalf of diesel tuners and performance businesses as they battle the EPA. The reason this article by James Gilboy is important is because most small businesses lack the resources to fight a legal battle against the unlimited resources of the government. 

The article begins as a news account regarding Arizona diesel truck tuner Gear Box Z (GBZ), which has been in the crosshairs for what the EPA considers an "emissions defeat devices." The reason SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Assn.) got involved is because the definition of what is unacceptable to the agency has been expanding in recent years, even though no new laws were created. Things which were fine before are being fined now. 

Case in point: Freedom Diesel Performance of Bradenton, Florida, was put out of business by a seven million dollar fine, and others are being needled as well.

The New York Times story in January served notice that the EPA meant business in its efforts to crack down on "emissions defeat devices" but SEMA points to changes that took place 5 years ago with regard to the interpretation of aspects of the Clean Air Act that were once applied more narrowly. Until then dedicated off-roaders and racers were exempt. 

SEMA is not fighting the EPA in order to make polluting legal. Rather, they are attempting to be pro-active regarding the continued infringement of rights for enthusiasts and give greater clarity to the law. Gilboy writes:

GBZ was attributed in the EPA's Jan. 3, 2020 filing with Arizona's U.S. District Court as a source of "EGR Delete Hardware," "Exhaust Replacement Pipes," "DPF Emulators," and "Defeat Tune Products" from Jan. 1, 2015, to April 24, 2017. The first two products on that list remain available on GBZ's site at the time of publishing. In the company's listing for said "Exhaust Replacement Pipes," GBZ notes that they are intended for race vehicles.

In December 2019 SEMA approached Congress to introduce legislation titled Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act. This act sought to bring greater clarity to what is and is not acceptable. After passing through a House Committee the legislation has not been forwarded to the floor of Congress.

Several years ago there were efforts in California to outlaw the street rod culture because they were built in the years before contemporary emissions mandates were in effect. SEMA conducted a study that demonstrated how one maritime transport craft idling in a California port for one day produces more emissions than all the street rods in California would produce in a whole year. 

This advocacy role is invaluable for the industry and its enthusiast constituents because who else has the time and money to conduct these kinds of studies and gather this information. SEMA is thus an important ally for small businesses in the automotive aftermarket as well as for the enthusiast consumers who rely on them.

More Insights on the Future of Diesel: An Engine Design that Meets 2027 California Standards

This engine by Achates Power is getting real attention.
We've all seen the impact of communication technologies and the Internet. The world today is far different from the one we experienced as kids in the Fifties. There are many futurists who have been watching the auto industry, anticipating an equally explosive shift with regards to the future of transportation. One of these is Mike Millikin, founder and editor of Green Car Congress

Millikin was a trained journalist who spent most of his career in IT and Internet related pursuits. He was right in the center of the 90s whirlwind that transformed everything. In 2004, he saw that an even bigger transformation was coming as science was applied toward the goal of green transportation and energy. 

This past week Green Car Congress published an article titled Achates opposed-piston 3-cylinder 10.6L diesel emissions meet 2027 EPA, CA requirements.  It's about a radically improved internal combustion engine that meets California emissions standards. That seems pretty progressive as far as I'm concerned.

The article begins:


Achates Power’s innovative 3-cylinder, 10.6L opposed-piston heavy-duty diesel engine has achieved performance results that comply with pending 2027 requirements of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California to reduce sharply emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Engine and aftertreatment system development and performance assessments were conducted at the Achates Power facility in San Diego and the Aramco Research Center-Detroit.


It is a major development for a project that aims to improve the environmental performance of commercial vehicles using hydrocarbon fuels.

The most recent test of the engine, including aftertreatment, measured 0.02g per brake horsepower-hour (g bhp/hr), demonstrating the capability of the engine to be certified under California’s ultra-low NOx regulation, which requires diesel commercial vehicle engines to reduce NOx by 90% by 2027 to no more than 0.02g bhp/hr over the Federal Test Procedure (FTP) cycle.

Furthermore, carbon dioxide emissions are 8% below the current standards in California. As the saying goes, "Aim high, you just might hit it." 

The engine is a three-cylinder design in which the opposed pistons move vertically. Achates Power power accomplished this achievement with a standard DEF injection aftertreatment system.

The Future of Diesel

Interest in the future goes back to the dawn of man, no doubt. 19th century visionary Jules Verne, whose books took readers 20,000 leagues under the sea, to the center of the earth and around the moon, had his sights set on the future. H.G. Wells' Time Machine carried readers far into the future. And a whole host of 20th century sci fi writers have given us visions of a tomorrow filled with robots, androids and pre-cogs. 

These thoughts crossed my mind as I read this article about commercial trucks of the future. The headline asks, Does Diesel Have a "Sell By" Date

The article, appeared in the Diesel Technology Forum this week, notes that 90% of the trucks on our nation's highways and byways are currently diesel. Based on current trends, what will be the configuration of diesel technology and trucking in 2040? This is the author's prediction:

Fast forward twenty years from now, and trucks will most likely be powered by a diversity of fuels and technology. Some may be powered by hydrogen and fuel cells, some may be battery electric, some may be operating on renewable natural gas or renewable diesel fuel. In any event, according to many sources, rather than having a “sell by“ date, diesel will remain as the dominant technology moving the nation’s freight for decades to come. 

Despite California's efforts to the contrary, industry insiders seem to agree that a majority of over-the-road transporters will still be diesel powered. 

Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates that less than 20% of our heavy-duty commercial trucks will be powered by electricity in 2040. IHS Markit makes a similar estimate. Others make similar proposals. 

As one who has been paying attention to these issues--emissions and fuel economy--for more than a quarter century, I believe that there is a disconnect between what the public understands and what is really happening. Diesel engine manufacturers have made remarkable strides toward cleaner production of efficient power. 

This is by no means an attempt to derail efforts to improve. The article goes on to note that diesel engines have the advantage of being adaptable to alternative fuels that can reduce emissions.

Diesel trucks also have the capability of operating on advanced renewable biofuels that drive down greenhouse gas emissions, operating on high quality blends of biodiesel or 100 percent renewable diesel fuel. These are fuels that have at least a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions relative to petroleum, with renewable diesel fuel, GHG emissions are reduced by at least 80 percent.

Whereas it's impossible to forecast the future with perfect 20/20 vision, that doesn't mean we can't have inklings. The stories that fill the headlines don't always reflect the realities. I remember the 1970's when  it was said that we will run out of oil in 10 years. They said it again in the 80s and 90s. Now, some say, there is more oil in the ground than we will ever take out.
