A Refresher for Diesel Fleet Owners to Get a Better Understanding of FA-4

The launch of API FA-4 heavy-duty engine oils in conjunction with API CK-4 lubricants created confusion in some peoples' minds. The introduction of these two classed of diesel oil was a step forward.

"FA-4 oil specifications were released back in 2016 and have been produced to enhance fuel efficiency. However, slower OEM adoption rates and engine protection concerns have kept some fleets from moving forward with adopting the new oil category."

So began a story by Cristina Commendatore that appeared in the October issue of Fleet Owner magazine, How fleets can determine if FA-4 engine oil is right for them.

When API released FA-4 oil specs in 2016, there was a measure of confusion, as often happens with new lubricant categories. Four years down the highway, and it's apparent that there's either confusion or a lack of confidence regarding the issue of engine protection in these lower viscosity oils. Some fleets are still debating whether to make the switch.

The backward compatible CK-4 spec replaced CJ-4 as the most current for apps in which a CJ-4 oil is recommended. The benefits include better shear stability, oxidation resistance and aeration control. The thinner FA-4 oils offer improved fuel economy. They were designed to help meet more stringent demand to meet environmental aims.

Hence, the use of the letter F in the spec. F stands for Fuel economy. The A indicates that this is the first generation of oil specific to this objective.

Commendatore focuses on the misperception that FA-4 and CK-4 oils have different qualification standards. That is, some people think that FA-4 was more concerned with fuel economy at the expense of engine protection. This is not the case at all. FA-4 oils are absolutely required to pass the same engine protection tests.

She asks: So, how can fleets determine whether the new FA-4 category is right for them?

The answer is this: Fleets with model year equipment from 2014 and newer, or Detroit Diesel engines as far back as 2010, are the recommended candidates.

Engine manufacturers and lube makers only work when they work together. Oil and water may not mix, but oil formulators and engine builders absolutely must.

The rest of the article details some of the issues created during this period in which government has applied pressure to also reduce emissions. For fleet owners, another challenge is that many truck fleets have both older and newer vehicles. This means inventorying two different oils and making sure the correct oil gets in the correct trucks during oil changes.

If you're a fleet owner or do fleet maintenance, read the rest of this article here.

Champion Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oil Recommended for Limited-Edition Shelby F-250 Super Baja Pick-Up

With our editors on vacation, we're re-posting a few of our favorite stories from the previous year. This story appeared in March.

In February the story broke about the new Shelby F-250 Super Baja Limited. It was a fun story because for many, this is what dreams are made of. The name alone is iconic, in part because of its celebrated history. It's not every day that you see a car designer featured on the silver screen. (Ford v. Ferrari) Then again, the Shelby story really does at times appear to be bigger than life.

So it with special enthusiasm that I read yesterday's news headline:

Champion Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oil Recommended for Limited-Edition Shelby F-250 Super Baja Pick-Up

Here's the rest of the story.

Champion Oil, a global leader in performance diesel engine oil now celebrating its 65th anniversary, announced that Shelby American is recommending Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oil  for its new
Ford Shelby F-250 Super Baja, a Limited-Edition off-roading pick-up truck.

“We deigned the Shelby F-250 Super Baja pickup to perform under extreme conditions, both on and off-road," said Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American. “With 6.7-liter V8 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel churning out 475-horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque, the truck can really fly. For such an aggressive application, we recommend using Champion’s Blue Flame 15w40 CK4/SN Performance Diesel Engine Oil."

Built for Shelby in Elkhart, Indiana, by Tuscany Motor Co., and in Las Vegas by the Shelby American team, the trucks will be sold at select Ford dealers in the U.S. Each will be documented in the official Shelby Registry. Production will be limited to only 250 vehicles.

Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oils are formulated with workhorse high-zinc performance additives, superior protection, advanced polymer technology, and high TBN, supported by a carrier blend of synthetic fluids. The Shelby F-250 Super Baja needs a total of 13 quarts of oil including the capacity of the oil filter.

In addition, Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oils deliver unmatched high temperature film strength and lubricity protection, with the muscle to combat oil shear and maximize sustained cylinder compression. They also inhibit oxidation, corrosive acids, sludge and varnish build-up.

These robust performance oils keep diesel engines going longer by reducing soot-induced engine wear, controlling abrasive soot contamination and preventing high temperature corrosion, even while allowing for improved fuel economy and lower total cost of ownership. Five Questions To Help You Decide Which Diesel Oil To Use

If you're confused when it comes to choosing the right engine oil for your truck, don't be alarmed. You're not alone.

Sometimes it seems like everything is more complicated than it used to be. When was the last time you looked at the toothpaste options at Walgreens. Seems like it's a half mile long with every kind of whitener, plaque remover, gum treatment, breath freshener, ad nauseam

In the lubrication world, the various terms may be different, but the level of confusion remains the same. Viscosity control? Shear stability? TBN retention?

When all is said and done, the best place to begin your oil selection search is to consider your application. Are tractor pulling or drag racing? Is the application stationary, street, or off-road? Here are five basic questions to help direct you to the right solution.

What are your engine oil specifications?
It’s important to follow what your original equipment manufacturer recommends. Reading your owner’s manual is the key to maximizing your equipment’s performance. Your manual contains vital API information about caring for your engine, including which oil grades are best suited for them. For example: SAE 15W-40, 10W-30, 5W-40 oil? Mineral, semi, or full synthetic base stock needs to be considered.

How important is fuel economy?
If you’re keeping an eye on your miles per gallon, the right lubricant can help your equipment achieve its maximum fuel efficiency. By squeezing a few extra miles from each tank, you can see major savings over time. A semi or full-synthetic diesel engine oil is your best option to deliver maximum fuel efficiency without compromising engine performance. It can improve fuel economy by up to 2 percent under normal conditions and by up to 3 percent during cold starts.

Does your diesel engine run in a range of temperatures?
Speaking of cold starts, temperature is another important consideration when choosing an engine oil. Extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, can be brutal on moving parts in your equipment. Heat can quickly turn an engine into an oven, and the cold can thicken some oils until they’re practically jelly.

How old is your diesel engine?
Most diesel owners want to stretch the life of their engine as long as possible. To perform their best, older diesel engines require attentive care, and a quality lubricant can go a long way toward maintaining them. For example, is your diesel not running a DPF? Rebuilt for performance? Out of warranty?

Are looking for more horse power or torque?
Be sure to look at the oil’s data or spec sheet to see if it addresses increased performance, high in anti-wear protection, etc. Look for semi and full synthetic diesel engine oils that use shear stable synthetic base oils. That are also high in film strength, have viscosity control, work with high compression, have a higher TBN retention, and if needed, designed to address demands of turbo or super-charged diesel engines.

I hope this has helped a little in your decision. Need a place to start? Take a look at these eight diesel engine oils: https://www.championbrands.com/diesel-engine-oils/ And if you're still confused, Ask Jake.

What do Dimples Have in Common with Diesel Engine Oil?

This morning at 8:00 a.m. The Masters opened in Augusta, Georgia.

Enthusiasts in the golf industry enjoy the impact between a golf club and a golf ball. With diesel engine oil, enthusiasts enjoy the impact of driving with increased horse-power and torque.

Hence, Champion is offering 12 Titleist PRO V1 Golf Balls with any purchase of Champion Blue Flame Performance Diesel Oil of 12 gallons or more during the months of April and May. Send a copy of your purchase and shipping address to marketing@championbrands.com

Did you know? The impact on a golf ball typically lasts only 1/2000 of a second, but it establishes the ball's velocity, launch angle and spin rate. After this brief impact the ball's trajectory is controlled entirely by gravity and aerodynamics--no matter how much the golfer hopes or curses. As a result, aerodynamic optimization is achieved through a dimple pattern design.

A smooth golf ball hit by a professional golfer would travel only about half as far as a golf ball with dimples does. Most golf balls have between 300 and 500 dimples, which have an average depth of about 0.010 inch. The lift and drag forces on a golf ball are very sensitive to dimple depth: a depth change of 0.001 inch can produce a radical change to the ball's trajectory and the overall distance it can fly.

Dimples on a golf ball create a thin turbulent boundary layer of air that clings to the ball's surface. This allows the smoothly flowing air to follow the ball's surface a little further around the back side of the ball, thereby decreasing drag.

Dimples also affect lift. A smooth ball with backspin creates lift by warping the airflow such that the ball acts like an airplane's wing. The spinning action makes the air pressure on the bottom of the ball higher than the air pressure on the top; this imbalance creates an upward force on the ball. Ball spin contributes about one half of a golf ball's lift. The other half is provided by the dimples, which allow for optimization of the lift force.

The impact of Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oils is also measurable. These robust oils are formulated with workhorse high-zinc performance additives, superior protection, advanced polymer technology, and high TBN, supported by a carrier blend of synthetic fluids.

In addition, Blue Flame Diesel Engine Oils deliver unmatched high temperature film strength and lubricity protection, with the muscle to combat oil shear and maximize sustained cylinder compression. They also inhibit oxidation, corrosive acids, sludge and varnish build-up.

Basic Fundamentals for Adding Life to Your Diesel Engine

Last week The Intelligent Driver published an article on how to increase the lifespan of your diesel engine. Zeid Nasser's story was titled Innovative Ways You Maintain Cars With Diesel Engines Better

It's well known that diesel engines are famous for their longevity, but to to get the most out of your workhorse you also need to feed it with TLC. Or as the saying goes: the more you give, the more you get.

Here are Nasser's seven tips for extending the life of your diesel.

Use the right fuel

Diesel fuel is a petroleum product like gasoline, but it is refined differently. Diesel applications vary, and so do diesel fuels. What you put in a car is not what is recommended for off-road. The key, then, is to use what your manufacturer recommends. In either event, avoid low quality fuels.

Keep your fuel injectors clean

Injectors on a diesel are its most complex component. Unlike port injectors on gasoline engines, diesel injectors spray fuel directly into the cylinders. Injectors must be able to withstand intense heat while delivering the fuel in a fine mist. This is why injectors need to be kept clean and free of deposits. Fouled injectors will result in poor performance and, according to Nasser, eventual failure.

Allow the engine to cool down

Longer service life for most vehicles corresponds to how we drive. Diesel vehicles should be allowed to cool down before attempting to restart. After a hard day of towing, it is recommended that you not shut off the vehicle immediately upon arrival at your destination. Rather, you want to idle the engine, give it a little rest time so it can cool down.

For a deeper explanation as to why this is recommended, check out this excellent breakdown: To Idle Your Diesel or Not, That Is The Question!

Keep your filters clean

The author states that keeping your fuel filters clean is an imperative for longer life expectancy. We think this advice should be carried over to all your vehicles filters. They serve important functions and should not be neglected.

Change fluids on schedule

It's one of the first things new drivers learn when they get their license. Check your fluid levels on a regular basis. By paying attention to fluid levels one can often catch a signal of other problems that may be taking place and fix it before it. worsens.

Winter requires extra care

The harsh conditions of winter can have consequences for the unprepared. Moisture, snow and low temps can be quite unkind to your engines. Check out this article on More Maintenance Tips for Your Diesel Equipment

Routine maintenance with a reliable mechanic

The author's final recommendation is a familiar one. Someone once said that whenever you move to a new location, one of the first things you should do is find a competent mechanic whom you can trust. "Diesel engine maintenance is a vital component of keeping your truck or car running properly." It is wrong to assume diesel engines require less maintenance, Nasser writes.

In short, not only will a good maintenance regimen help your vehicle last longer, it will also save you time and money.

Are You a New Diesel Owner? A Few Things to Think About

First time diesel owners quickly learn that there are differences between diesel- and gasoline-fueled engines. How does this impact the oil change maintenance regimens one has developed as a vehicle owner?

It helps to understand your oil's responsibilities. Oil plays a variety of roles in your engine. Oil lubricates moving parts to reduce friction and reduce wear as well as keeping the engine running cooler. It also creates a seal between piston rings and cylinder walls. In addition, oil helps keep the engine clean by conveying soot and other contaminants away to be collected in the filters.

The interior of an engine is exceedingly brutal on lubricants. For this reason, oil gets abused and over time breaks down. Additives in the oil also get depleted. This is why oil doesn't last forever and must be changed periodically.

How often we change our oil depends on yet another variable, our driving habits.

This is why you see shorter drain intervals listed "for severe service." Owner's manuals give specific recommendations regarding the type of oil you use as well as the duration you can safely drive with that oil.

One example of driving behavior that qualifies as severe service would be towing, especially when frequently carrying loads uphill as in that road up the long incline from Sedona to the Grand Canyon. You may not live in the Rockies but many parts of the country have their uphill grades that put extra stress on an engine pulling a load.

Stop and go driving does a number on your engine oil as well. This is why it is also considered "Severe Service/Severe Use."

A third type of activity that is harmful for your oil is idling. Some people may think idling is just giving the engine a rest. Why is that bad? In point of fact, because engines that are idling are not operating at peak temperature, the fuel fails to undergo complete combustion. As a result the fuel residue on cylinder walls can contaminate the oil and cause corrosion in other parts of the engine.

Another thing to think about is the where you live and its impact. The diesel owner needs to understand the environment they drive in and how it effects oil contamination from air flow. 80% of all the contaminant in the oil that depletes additives comes from the air stream after the air filter. The dirtier the environment the more frequent you might have to change filters and oil.  Monitoring through oil analysis you  can understand what’s happening including decreasing TBN or increasing TAN.

For best results, use the correct oil for
your application.
Some aspects of driving are counterintuitive. That is, they go against what you might otherwise think. Driving long distances on highways will do less damage to your engine oil than driving half that amount of distance in town.

Whether driving a Ford Power Stroke, Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cummins, your owner's manual provides guidance as regards what oil to use along with a recommended drain interval. A complete oil change includes changing the filter as well. If you take care of your engine, it will take care of you as well, for a very long time.

A Hemmings Story: The 1982 Chevrolet LUV Diesel

The Love Bug was a 1968 film, starring Dean Jones and Michele Lee, that capitalized on the fame of the VW Beetle. Four years later Chevrolet had a LUV of its own.

In 1972 GM introduced the Chevrolet LUV and later a Chevroley LUV D-Max, light utility pickup trucks designed and manufactured by Isuzu, marketed in the U.S. The vehicles were essentially re-badged variations of the Isuzu Faster and D-Max.

This week an eagle-eyed friend spotted a blue 1982 Chevy LUV with a 2.2L Diesel engine at the Hemmings site. A unique feature of that detail is that the 1982 version of the LUV was the only year this vehicle came with a diesel engine.

The first generation Chevrolet LUV ran from 1972 to 1980. The second generation was initiated in 1981. The North American LUVs were produced by Isuzu in Japan for the North American market. The Chev LUVs sold in South America were produced in Chile. The 2.2L diesel engine is linked to a 5-speed manual transmission that seems like it would be fun to drive. This particular LUV only has 95,000 miles. Asking price: $15,000.

There have been interesting upgrades over the years. The aftermarket radio with Bluetooth is certainly not original equipment, for example.

No doubt it's been sold, but it you luv that truck, you might get lucky and track it down.

Photos always tell a story, and this set of photos will also teach you how to showcase a vehicle for selling online. Check it out.

Originally Lowe Oil Co. founded by Ralph Lowe in 1956, Champion Brands, LLC is a globally recognized industry leader in specialty lubricants. Champion produces and blends more than 350 products including fuel, oil and engine additives, brake fluids and motor oils for the automotive, heavy truck, racing, performance, industrial, commercial, agricultural and specialty markets.  https://www.championbrands.com/products/

Champion understands the complexities of doing business in today’s market and is always looking for new and better ways to be more efficient and resourceful. Quality products are more than a commitment at Champion; high standards define the way it does business. Champion is an ISO 9001:2015 Certified and Registered Company.

The company uses top tier additives and base stocks to formulate products for outstanding wear protection, fuel economy, high temperature stability, long-life protection, improved efficiency, oxidation resistance, lower evaporation, increased performance, friction reduction, and lubricant compatibility across a wide range of engine operating conditions and applications.

Headquartered in Clinton, Missouri, just 75 miles southeast of Kansas City, Champion’s 450,000 square foot plant with 30 loading bays accommodates more than 1.7 million gallons of bulk storage with convenient rail siding.

The plant has 10 filling lines and several blow molding machines including two Bekum 406 production units capable of blowing PVC and HDPE bottles, one Bekum 807D with 6-layer capability for containers up to 5 gallons and one AOKI PET Blow Molding Machine. Depending on the particular configuration, Champion is capable of producing well over 100,000 bottles per day. Three resin silos with over ½ million-pound capacity supply the blow molders.

The facility also houses state-of-the-art net weight and piston filling lines capable of filling 300+ containers per minute to exact weight specifications. Containers are de-palletized, labeled, filled, sealed, capped, coded, packed and palletized, using only 3 operators. Lines are capable of running metal, HDPE, PVC and PET containers in sizes ranging from 2.4 oz to 330 gallon totes.

The speed and versatility of these lines make it a high volume, cost effective solution for the many Fortune 500 companies that private label and package product with Champion. Fluid blending and storage capacity includes over 100 tanks ranging from 1.5K to 34K gallons for blending lubricants, brake fluids and various chemicals.

The collection of blending tanks feeds the elaborate pigging system designed to prevent cross-product contamination. Rail siding and tanker truck load/offload locations provide the versatility to receive/ship bulk fluids in sizes ranging up to 30,000-gallon rail cars.

Ten lubricant/chemical filling lines package engine oils, hydraulic fluids, specialty oils, fuel additives, and automotive fluids that include power steering fluid, brake fluid, tire sealant, etc. Each line has specific types of products that it can package. Bottles are labeled, capped, heat sealed (if needed), coded, placed into cartons, and loaded onto pallets.

Champion has a very modern testing laboratory. While the lab’s primary function is to test the performance of products before they are packaged, the lab also has the tools to perform elemental analysis of fluids to blueprint the various components of different fluids or test used fluid. The talented R&D team formulates the world’s most advanced, engineering-approved fluids that exceed API, ILSAC, ACEA, JASO, Dexos, and other OEM and global standards.

Champion formulates and provides custom packaging for private label products including mineral, semi-synthetic and full-synthetic engine oils, fuel treatments, brake fluids, hydraulic fluids, automotive additives and chemicals, and more. The product portfolio is one of the largest in the industry.  https://www.championbrands.com/private-label/
