Car & Driver Puts 2021 Chevy Suburban Diesel to the Test but You May Have to Wait to Get One

A week ago Car & Driver published an enticing review of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The story, titled Tested: 2021 Chevrolet Suburban Diesel Should Be the Default Choice, gave a mouth-watering review of the 2021 Suburban, went so far as to suggest that all Suburbans should be powered by the diesel Duramax 3.0 engine. 

Automotive journalist Ezra Dyer describes how "the 3.0-liter six is perfectly adapted to Suburban duty. Its 460 pound-feet of torque arrive at only 1500 rpm, imbuing the 6272-pound behemoth with an air of nonchalant muscularity in real-world driving."

The diesel Suburban is not a race car, and you wouldn't expect it to be with a 277-hp engine, but it does jump from zero to sixty in a quick 8.4 seconds, and adequate pace for merging into traffic.

For Dyer, one of the high points on this SUV is its stability. It's smooth. "With that luxurious 134-inch wheelbase and four-wheel independent suspension, the Suburban glides imperiously down interstates, whether perched on its base steel springs or the optional air suspension with magnetic ride control," he writes of the full-sized SUV. 

The noise volume on this car -- or lack of it -- is noteworthy. When cruising along at 70 mph, the volume is equivalent to a Lexus ES350. And of the noise you do hear, most of it is wind and tires, with only a mild hum coming from the straight-six on the other side of the firewall.

When it came to the low points of this story, there really wasn't much to say. The Suburban gets decent numbers when it comes to city and highway driving. And the diesel can tow around four tons if need be. Other "low points" read like high points, with the only real gripe being that the diesel Duramax is not the default engine and you have to request it.

And now the bad news. If you are one of those who was sufficiently enticed into considering this as your next purchase, hold your horses. The Fast Lane Truck (TFLTruck.com) just broke the news that GM is temporarily stopping production of the 3.0 Duramax Diesel Inline-6 engine due to a parts shortage.

These Covid-era supply shortages are more than annoying. Chip shortages have caused the automakers plenty of headaches already this year. Over the weekend GM confirmed that this will impact the Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.

Fortunately it's only a temporary setback. They promise to resume production as soon as possible.   

Demand for Chev Tahoe and Suburban Diesels Is Growing

How many manufacturers of full-sized SUVs offer a diesel engine alternative? Toyota does not. Nor does Nissan. And neither does Ford. GM alone seems to own this space with a trio of large SUVs -- the Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and the GMC Yukon. GM has evidently identified an unmet need that its competitors have neglected, or simply or created a demand that consumer have been waking up to.

According to the article in GM Authority, when GM made a decision to insert its 3.0-liter I-6 LM2 turbo-diesel Duramax into their 2021 Chevy Tahoe and 2021 Chevy Suburban, both models saw an increase in orders for the diesel engine option. And that is the point this article strives to bring home.

Whereas gasoline-powered full-sized Tahoe and Suburban SUVs still garner more than 90 percent of sales, the story is about the significant growth taking place in the diesel category. Sales numbers reflect the highest take rates since the Duramax became an option.

What is it that is causing this increased interest in the full-sized diesel SUVs? Some surmise that the SUV body styling is preferred over the Chev Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500, which both offer the same engine. There is certainly a place for each in the lineup. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

The article proceeds to outline the special characteristics of the 3.0-liter LM2 Duramax engine, which features a duel overhead cam (DOHC) configuration and direct injection, enabling it to produce 277 hp at 3,750 rpm with 460 pound-feet of torque at 1500 rpm. For it size the fuel economy looks good, too. Both are "significantly more efficient" than their gasoline-powered counterparts.

When it comes to towing, the Tahoe diesel is able to tow more than four tons or carry a max payload of 1717 pounds. The Suburban likewise can tow four tons and carry a payload of 1,625 lbs. These are essentially workhorses dressed in their Sunday best.

Without a doubt the bottom line in this story is that diesel engines are being embraced by a broader portion of the market. The benefits have been increasingly recognized, and sales numbers are confirming it.

2021 Chev Silverado Diesel Makes a Splash in Argentina

On January 1, GM Authority kicked off the year with a story about a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado that was unveiled in Argentina a few days before in Cariló Park. The Silverado 1500 is a diesel-powered gem, and as you can from the photo here it is dressed in silver so luscious it appears to be liquid.

Deivis Centeno, the author of the story, shared how this was a pretty big surprise when the Silverado was unveiled at the end of year event a couple days earlier. The silver LTZ is equipped with a Duramax turbo-diesel 3.0L LM2 inline-six engine that generates 281 hp and 457 pound-feet of torque.

Argentina has more than 14 million cars and trucks on the road, more than any other Latin or South American country other than Brazil and Mexico. It's understandable that GM is seeking to find the right vehicles to match customer needs in that country. The Silverado is part of this effort. 

The top five brands in Argentina are Volkswagen, Toyota, Renault, Chevrolet and Ford. The two American automakers are neck and neck. GM has made a commitment to zero in on what Argentinians are looking for. 8% of the people there live in rural communities where agriculture remains strong. Ford is the leader in pickup truck sales, which is why GM is eager to win hearts with the Silverado.

Centeno states, "The automaker announced that it will continue analyzing its target audience’s preferences and fine-tune the most appropriate offer for the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado in the Argentine market. As a result, it’s possible that some versions of the pickup featuring the 5.3L L84 V8 engine, with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, will also be available in Argentina."

The Silverado is expected to go on sale during the first half of this year. It's summer in this Southern hemisphere country at the Southernmost tip of South America. GM has chosen an exotic location to display its offerings, at a place called the Chevrolet Forest Walk, a 28,000 sq. foot area in the middle of a forest. Pretty cool digs.

Are These the Best Special Edition Pickup Trucks Ever?

2004-2006 International MXT 4x4

On Christmas Day most of us are getting stuffed with goodies, reading one of the books we got from Santa or playing games with the kids (or grandkids, depending on your age.) Caleb Jacobs offered this present to truck enthusiasts: an article in The Drive about "the Best Special Edition Pickup Trucks Ever Made." 

He doesn't actually declare these the best. Rather, he suggests they are among the best by asking readers the question, Are These the Best Special Edition Pickups? He then produces a set of suggestions for consideration, just the kind of thing truck enthusiasts love to debate over a lengthy, leisurely after-dinner conversation, favorite libations in hand. Here are the trucks he cites, but I'll make you jump to The Drive for the details as regards why they're special.

He begins with that nostalgic fave, the 1978-79 Dodge Ram Li'l Red Express/Midnite Express. Jacobs dives into the key differences between the Li' Red and the Midnite. Whereas there were ample Li' Reds, there were only about 200 Midnites produced, making them rare though not forgotten. The reputation Li'l Red garnered for itself was based on being the first "hot rod pickup" and who doesn't like that notion?

The second truck he cites is the 1989 Dodge Shelby Dakota,  a truck with several special editions, one of them being a convertible. It, too, was quick though not a Li'l Red Express.

The 1991 GMC Syclone comes in with a whirlwind introduction. Supposedly there are some who would suggest that there's nothing left to say after the Syclone. GMC only made 3000 of them, all black except the Marlboro edition.

The 1991 Chevrolet 454 SS gets the next citation. This was another truck with "a menacing black scheme." To establish its reputation they replaced the small block 350 cu. in. engine with a 454 big block with monster oomph.

There's actually an EV here on the list, the 1997-98 Chevrolet S-10 Electric. The battery-powered pickup was targeted at fleet operators who needed highly efficient vehicles for around-town driving. For what it's worth, this fellow was front-wheel drive.

Other vehicles on Jacobs' list include the 1999-2004 Ford Lightning, the 2004-2006 Dodge Ram SRT-10,  the 2019-20 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, and (my favorite) the 2006-2008 International MXT 4x4. Of this latter, he points out that International hasn't produced pickup trucks since the 70's, being known for its medium- and heavy-duty trucks, which are reliable workhorses in our economy. 

"Clearly, the MXT rides higher than most factory pickups," Jacobs notes. "That's partially because it rides on 40-inch Pro Comp tires that are also 13.5 inches wide. Its 6.0-liter DT365 turbodiesel engine has no problems turning those, though, as it produces 300 hp and 530 pound-feet of torque."
