How to Get More Power from Your Diesel

Green Bay Packer coach Vince Lombardi made a powerful impression on the men he coached. I once read a book about his influence on the Packers who played for him. I forget the title, but it was something like Where Are They Now? Story after story we hear of players who became influential leaders in the businesses an communities.

Lombardi's style focused on fundamentals. He's famous for starting training camp the same way, year after year. "Gentlemen, this is a football."

The great Packer coach came to mind as I read the Taylor Diesel Group's March article about 7 ways to get more power for your diesel. There's a sense in which these seven things are familiar and we can take them for granted. Nevertheless, these kinds of articles are designed more to be a reminder of fundamentals than to teach us something new, aren't they. How many times do we see football teams lose games because a player has neglected basics like how to hold a football when running or how to recover a fumble.

7 Ways to Get More Power

1. Regular tune-ups
A consistent maintenance routine will enable you to detect minor issues before they become major issues. A stitch in time saves nine.

2. Air intake upgrades
If you're serious about power, this is an area you will want to invest in. A cold air intake or air flow kit will give significant boost in engine power. You know how it works. More oxygen-rich air will make it more efficient at burning fuel.

3. Turbocharger
Turbos are designed to push more air into the engine thereby producing a pressurized airstream that improves combustion.

4. Performance injectors
An upgrade to performance injectors can help you gain more power but can also improve mpg. No harm in that, right?

5. Re-program ECM
Your engine control module (ECM) is the brains in your engine. It gathers the information from your engine's various sensors and uses this info to calculate and tune engine spark and fuel for max power and efficiency. A pro mechanic can make adjustments that bring the best out of your beast.

6. Exhaust upgrade
Most lists of things one can do to improve performance will point to the exhaust upgrade as both essential and worth the bucks. The wider pipes aren't just for looks. They enable exhaust gases to be dispersed more quickly and efficiently. Smoother acceleration, less engine noise and improved mpg are a few of the benefits according to TDG.

7. Fuel additives
Fuel additives help keep parts clean and help the engine run in an optimal manner. Much more can be said here and maybe we take a deeper dive another time.

If you're a diesel guy you know these basic maneuvers and I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know. These may be basics, but for sure if you aspire to play with the big boys you'll want to make sure your fundamentals are covered. Afterwards you can add your own secret sauce.

Can I Drop a Diesel Engine into My Classic Muscle Car?

This weekend I saw this story from Hot Rod in which John Gilbert is working on his tricked out '66 Chevelle. His aim was to get this classic 60's muscle car ready for the ARMO Booth at SEMA this year. ARMO, he explains for the uninitiated, is an acronym for the Automotive Restoration Market Organization.

I clicked on the article because at first I thought it was unusual that John Gilbert was working on an old car. As it turns out, John Gilbert of Hot Rod fame is not the John Gilbert the car guy who had a syndicated column in which he wrote about new cars.

I had lunch with the latter John Gilbert once. He had some kind of deal with all the Detroit automakers in which he was given new cars to drive around so he could write about his experiences. Free cars for Gilbert, and publicity for the automakers. Kind of a nice gig if you can get it, eh?

John Gilbert the syndicated columnist drove new cars and didn't fuss with what was under the hood, to my knowledge.

By way of contrast, John Gilbert of Hot Rod is a grease-under-the-fingernails kind of guy. He knows cars inside and out. At one time he was tech editor for Super Chevy magazine and, if I remember correctly, I believe he is also an artist on the side. Of course for many of us, cars and trucks have always been an art form.

The objective for Gilbert's project car was to incorporate as many convenience and performance upgrades as possible while maintaining the factory appearance. This overhaul went from front to rear, including wire kits and headers, stainless steel mufflers and more.

________

Now to get to my reason for writing all this. The article made stirred my mind with this thought: Is it possible to drop a diesel engine into a vintage muscle car? What I wondered was whether the Daimler diesel engine I wrote about in September could be dropped into a four-barrel SS or Classic Mustang? Or John Gilbert's Chevelle.

One of the first articles I found on this topic is titled 10 Things to Consider Before Swapping and Engine. The answer is yes you can, but you have to be careful. And what kind of money are you prepared to spend?

Truck Trend has all the relevant information for those who want to drop a high-powered Duramax diesel engine into a gas-powered truck. The article is titled Our Complete Guide to Parts and Providers for Gas-to-Diesel Engine Swaps. Reading the article through makes it apparent that the undertaking, while possible, is not for the faint of heart.

One of the rules of thumb to be aware of is that to satisfy smog rules, you can't install an engine that is older than the year the truck was produced. Just a word to the wise.

As for engine swaps in trucks, have you ever done it yourself? How did it go?

Till next.

First Mods for Your New Diesel Pickup

This past week I came across a video titled Top 5 Mods for Your Powerstroke Diesel and it got me thinking about the countless ways our trucks can be enhanced, either for looks or for power. The YouTube video is one in a series of vids by TopCorey, whose YouTube channel currently has over 42 thousand subscribers. There's a link down below.

Thinking about modifications led me to do a quick search for other sites with recommendations of where to begin. This article by Trent McGee at Diesel Power Products's website seemed especially useful for guys and gals seeking max power for competition. According to McGee, these are the three critical areas where you need to invest.

What I like about this article is that it begins by explaining what an engine really is. "An engine is essentially a giant air pump," McGee writes. "It draws in outside air, compresses and injects fuel for ignition, then exhales the spent gasses." That's a very concise and explicit explanation. In other words, it's an efficient form of creating power but requires sufficient air and fuel, and a means for getting rid of the spent gases. For optimal power you also need a way to control that air-fuel mix ratio.

In short, once you understand this, you understand why this article proposes the three following modifications. Once you process the previous paragraph, the essential modifications are three in number.

1) Cold Air Intake

2) Exhaust System Upgrade

3) In-line Programmer or Tuner
Installed between the ECM and the engine, think of it as A.I. for your performance diesel.

The article goes into depth on each of these three vehicle enhancements. You can find it here:
THE TRIFECTA: THE BEST FIRST MODS FOR YOUR DIESEL TRUCK

_______

The video shares TopCorey's Top 5 Mods for Your Powerstroke Diesel  which are directed more to Powerstrokes, but have application to all diesel owners. You can see that the first three mods are identical to the Trifecta above, except in a different order. The last two items on his list of five are more in the realm of cosmetics.

1) Custom Tuning via Easylink ("Unlocks a truck's true potential")

2) Exhaust Upgrade (5 inch pipe recommended)

3) Factory modified VGT Turbo from SPE

4) Wheels, Tires, Lift Kit

5) Window Tinting

Some of us like to get information through reading, others through seeing. The options are many and it sometimes helps to get guidance from people who have been there and done that.

_________

Afterword: The Trifecta article has the words "Written by Trent McGee" in the title, but at the beginning of the article itself are the words "Written By: Diesel Josh" For what it's worth, I want to make sure whoever actually wrote this gets credit. Good stuff.

In the Beginning There Was a Need for Performance

Diesel. Power. Performance. History. Nostalgia. The smell of burnt rubber.

Blue Flame Diesel Oil was central to all of that.

With the same idea in mind, the Blue Flame Blogger hopes to become a central resource for everyone who still has a passion for Performance with a capital P.

If we learned anything this year, it's that we can never take tomorrow for granted. Just around the next bend in the road after you just missed hitting a deer, you find a huge detour sign at Mile 2020.

The good part is that All Things Must Pass. Eventually we'll be looking at 2020 through the rear-view mirrors.

As much as possible it's my goal to become a resource for everyone everywhere who's involved with diesel performance in any capacity. It's my hope that I and my team of ne'er-do-wells can keep you current with major market trends and pricing issues, government regs, who the players are and all the happenings that will emerge or re-emerge in the months ahead.

It's a long and winding road on the highway of life, but when you're doing a tractor pull, straight ahead is the way to go. Todo derecho, hombre.

Let's get real. You only live once.
